An AI teacher has one advantage no classroom does: it's available at 11 pm, never gets bored of repeating itself, and won't make you feel embarrassed when you get a tone wrong for the tenth time. But most people use it like Google Translate — and get Google Translate results. Here's how to use it as a teacher.
1. Start from the sentence you need, not chapter one
Textbooks start with "This is a pen." You will never need that sentence. Ask the AI for sentences about your life: "Give me five simple sentences for ordering a coffee with no sugar in Taipei, with pinyin and meaning." Relevant sentences are remembered three times longer.
2. Ask for a level, not just a translation
- "Explain this using HSK 1 vocabulary only."
- "Use only words that are already in my word list."
- "Give me a more polite version and a casual version."
- "Why is 了 le used here? Give me three more examples."
3. Reply in Mandarin, even if it's wrong
This is the step 90% of people skip. After the AI gives you a sentence, answer in Mandarin — however badly — then ask for a correction: "Fix my sentence and explain my single biggest mistake." One mistake, not all of them; if you're corrected on five things at once you won't remember any.
4. Listen and imitate, don't just read
AI text without audio makes you memorise the wrong tones. Make sure every sentence comes with native-speaker audio, play it word by word, imitate, record yourself. If your tool has no audio, you're learning to read, not to speak.

Limits you should know
- AI can get tones wrong on rare words or place names. For exams, check against an official dictionary.
- General chatbots default to mainland Mandarin; if your target is Taiwan, say "use Taiwanese vocabulary and traditional characters".
